Giving the Kol. a Chance

Ok, so its no secret that I hate the fact the Eagles spent their first pick in the 2007 NFL draft on a quarterback. I simply cannot understand the logic, and no amount of "best player on the board" crap is going to convince me otherwise.

Kevin Kolb (pronounced Kobb, as in Corn on the -), however, is not the villain. He did not chose himself, and while I may call him Kernel Kolb (corn has kernels, colonel is a military rank, get it? {ed.: we got it doofus, now move on}) now and again, it doesn't mean I am not prepared to give the man a fair shake.

Check out this blog/video for an intro. to the Eagles new QB (courtesy Houston Chronicle.com).

Listen to an interview/podcast

I will say this for the guy, he says the right things, seems humble, and genuinely interested in playing for the Birds. All pluses....(now if only we'd taken him AFTER taking a DB....). I think there are going to be quite a few new Eagles fans down in Houston (after all, who else are they going to root for, the Texans? HA!)

Breaking Down the Choice of Garcia over Feeley

Well folks, Andy Reid made it official. He's chosen Jeff Garcia as the starter. It was almost inevitable. In truth, it is the safe move. Everyone knew this was the reason the Eagles signed Garcia, a proven starting QB in the NFL. To have selected A.J. (my personal choice) would have pried open the lid to the proverbial can of worms (but not exactly spilled them out right away).

AR said as much "I brought Jeff in there for this situation, for this reason right here." We all knew that, even after they scooped up A.J. shortly before the start of the season. Admittedly, Garcia is the option that leaves AR with other options down the line. A.J. is the big gamble: could we recapture that 2002 magic and have lightning strike twice for the same team....Well, AR still has that wildcard in the hip pocket, and by starting Garcia, Reid keeps a certain amount of QB integrity on the team. Like I said, I prefer A.J. (based primarily on the lackluster response the team showed towards Garcia with the game against the Titans still up for grabs)....however, if Reid had bypassed Garcia (in effect, scuttling his own depth chart) there is NO WAY could legitimately go to Jeff (and expect the team to accept it) should A.J. fall flat.

He's got a veteran QB, who's lead playoff teams. It may not be the move I would've made, but I can understand why he did it. For all our sakes' I hope it works out.

So Long TP/KD, and thanks for the fish

Ok, first post today is going to cover the most recent news: The Eagles released WR Tood Pinkston and career back-up QB Koy Detmer and brought back one-time back-up QB AJ Feeley (whose "15 minutes" came a few seasons ago when he went 4-1 subbing for an injured McNabb/Detmer combo)...

A few interesting notes:
- any Phans remember the "controversy" that year about who should be the starter? Some folks actually wanted Feeley to replace McNabb
- isn't it kinda weird that AJ can now throw passes to the man the Eagles drafted with the pick they received from Miami when we traded Feeley?
- I think this settles the "who is holding for Akers" question...Koy's only role the last couple of years was holding for Akers' kicks...so he will not be missed...
- a lot of folks like to trash Pinkston, but will not do that here. I agree that he was a total disappointment, but he took a lot of sh*t from people and comported himself with class...he was never a distraction, never a me-first kinda guy, I wish him the best, but I am not at all sad to see "alligator body" depart (yeah I am listening to Glen Macnow rips him apart on 610 and my happiness with his departure is beginning to grow).
